Don Helmut Szeliga, ecclesiastical counsellor of the Prato chapter (Italy) expresses deep gratitude to those who, on Tuesday 10 December, donated jackets and blankets for the Pakistani workers living in Forlì. On the strength of his previous experience in helping the workers in Prato, who are engaged in grueling shifts of 12 hours a day, seven days a week, Fr Helmut recounts a heavy reality of neglect. In the industrial area of Forlì, these workers live in very difficult conditions: they sleep in concrete shacks covered with rusted and perforated metal sheets, exposed to the cold and rain. There are very few useful items for daily life: a shared bathroom and a precarious electric hotplate. ‘Their routine is always the same: work-work-work and more work,’ says Don Helmut. ‘In order of time, this is the latest stage of a journey that is being made together with a network of solidarity with the aim of helping to protect and promote the dignity of people and work. A path that does not stop but is always active and ready to help in order to show closeness and concrete solidarity,’ concludes Don Helmut.
