The presbytery of Arezzo Cathedral, where I serve as bishop, was designed and created by the sculptor Giuliano Vangi. At the ambo, it features a convex surface in which the dead Christ can be glimpsed in the form of a bas-relief; the shape of the ambo itself, however, with its opening, represents the open and empty tomb. To the right, a figure of an angel is depicted in the act of speaking, as a herald and thus a witness to that empty tomb, to the Resurrection of Jesus, to Easter.

It is a significant feature within the chancel as a whole because it signifies that the place of the Word, the ambo, is the liturgical moment of the proclamation of life, of the Resurrection, of Easter in every Word proclaimed there.

These are the elements that characterise the proclamation of Easter even today.

First of all, a tomb which, as the Gospels of the Resurrection tell us, on Easter morning, whilst it was still dark, is found open and empty by the women who had gone to visit a dead person.

The tomb is our whole life, the horizon of the world, the sufferings of humanity. We are in a tomb because it contains the sufferings of every heart and the injustices and violence which, especially in these times, are perpetrated with contempt for the human dignity of every man and woman. In that tomb, we too are present, wounded by an unjust world and also by our own inconsistencies, failures, worries and sin. Easter is a proclamation that begins precisely there, from a tomb that holds all our skeletons and mortality, but which is surprisingly opened and illuminated by the light of God, by the light of the Father’s love.

We do not deny the tomb and the signs of death contained within it, but we proclaim that it is precisely that tomb—which gathers every sorrow and wound, every injustice and violence, every inconsistency and sin—that becomes the place which, visited by God’s love and the light of life, experiences a resurrection that brings a new perspective, a new way of thinking, a new way of speaking, and a new witness.

Easter speaks first and foremost of a tomb… but one that is now open and empty.

The second element is the presence of the angel who announces the newness of Easter, the news of life.

He reminds us that the reality of that tomb, visited by God’s love and now empty, is news to be echoed in life and in today’s world.

We need the angel to tell me, you, each one of us, that life has conquered death, that it has defeated our sin and our sorrows, that it has overcome our frailties and our wounds. And to us, to me, to everyone… the news of a new life is brought.

We need the angel to bring consolation and hope to peoples wounded by war, by injustices of every kind, by the oppression of the powerful over the weak. There are wounds to heal and people to defend, there are paths of reconciliation to build and bridges of encounter to sustain, and the news of Easter can be the proclamation of a possibility of peace that is not the fruit of human agreement, but the gift of a morning full of light, that morning of the Risen One, and it asks our hearts to open up to welcome the good news.

It is the ambo, the place of the proclamation of the Word, and it is the liturgical space where the reader and the presider take their places for the proclamation of the Word of God and the Gospel of the Risen One.

That ambo calls each of us to become proclaimers of the pages of the Gospel, of new life, of stories of resurrection, of the presence of the Lord Jesus, risen and alive.

Saint Francis, on whose 800th anniversary of his death and passing we reflect this year, reminds us that the Gospel is proclaimed through life, and only then, if necessary, through words.

Thus we are called to become like that angel and like Saint Francis, proclaimers of the Easter message through our witness: by becoming bearers of stories of life and by testifying that ours is a life that is risen, reconciled, loved and blessed, in charity.

The rich tradition of the Church’s social teaching echoes this Easter proclamation: of a world renewed in the light of the Gospel, of a contemporary world that calls on us to bring a message today capable of shedding light on current events and problems.

Only in this way can we celebrate the Resurrection and, with authenticity, wish one another a Happy Easter, all of us as brothers and sisters.

A new initiative has been launched by CAPPF which is an important project with a focus to deepen the knowledge for a theological and social reflection, aimed at promoting the thinking that originates in the Mediterranean in the light of the Social Doctrine of the Church. It is called ‘Theology from the Mediterranean’.

Launched last May at the CAPPF international conference, the project included a study session dedicated to the ‘Social Doctrine of Interreligious Dialogue for Peace and Economic Cooperation.’ In this context, the theme of “Social Doctrine of the Mediterranean. Interreligious Dialogue for Peace and Economic Cooperation on the Basis of the New Theology of the Mediterranean and from the Mediterranean’, taking as its reference the 2023 Marseille Manifesto entitled “Towards a Theology of the Mediterranean”. The discussion focused on ways to consolidate the ethical foundations for economic and social development and peace in and from the Mediterranean, with Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, Archbishop of Marseille and President of the French Bishops’ Conference, as the main speaker.

Cardinal Aveline returned to this theme in the editorial of this newsletter (December 2025), highlighting that “History will remember that, for his first apostolic journey, Pope Leo XIV chose the shores of the eastern Mediterranean, the cradle of Christianity, subsequently traveling to Turkey and Lebanon. In Turkey, the Holy Father celebrated with particular intensity the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea […]’.

These were important insights that saw the CAPPF engaged in the subsequent steps of reflection, discussion and debate at an international level, through webinars and seminars.

The meetings will continue during 2026. The year 2025 marked the beginning of a structured process of in-depth study on the theme.

This journey is designed to develop over time, gradually consolidate and open up to new contributions and perspectives for dialogue.
